Curve after curve towards vacation happiness. Even the journey to Balderschwang is an experience, because you get there via Germany's highest pass, the Riedbergpass.
Accompanied by a beautiful mountain panorama, you reach the highest community in Germany - a small mountain village with 246 inhabitants on the high plateau at 1,044 m above sea level, a paradise for rest and relaxation.
Balderschwang - the vacation paradise for nature lovers
Spring, summer, autumn and winter - Balderschwang in the Allgäu on the Austrian border is always worth a trip: in winter a snowy hole deep in the snow and an insider tip for cross-country skiing fans, winter sports enthusiasts and family. The snowy winters have even earned Balderschwang the name Bavarian Siberia.
In summer and autumn, head for the mountains for cycling, hiking or mountaineering, for example in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park. Thanks to the altitude mostly completely free of fog.

THE PAST WRITTEN IN STONE AND IN PEOPLE
KARST
The Karst is a region of striking contrasts: it is rocky and barren, but also colourful, magical and generous. Due to the uniqueness of karst phenomena, its name has become known all over the world.
The Karst Plateau rises above the Adriatic Sea. From the peaks of the higher slopes, you can watch the sun sinking into the sea every evening.
When the Karst landscape whispers in the bora wind, when you walk between the labyrinths of stone walls, when a friendly hand offers you a slice of Karst prosciutto and a glass of Teran wine, you simply know that you are in the Karst Region.
MAN AND KARST
“... he seems tough, determined, persistent and defiant, as well as soft in the Mediterranean way, talkative, often openly emotional, inaccessible and flexible...” (Slovenian poet Ciril Zlobec in the foreword to the book Prgišče Krasa (A Handful of Karst))
In prehistoric times, the Karst man had already found his soul mate in the Karst Region. The symbiosis between man and Karst has shaped the modesty, strength and perseverance of the local character.
The soul of a Karst man is as vast as the region’s diversity. Just as you need time to explore the diverse Karst Region, you should not be in a hurry when getting to know the local people. Only when you feel their genuine hospitality, can you truly become a part of the Karst.
KARST VILLAGE
Stone houses in Karst villages stand so close together that they seem to whisper the stories of their inhabitants. The narrow streets are interwoven between the high walls of Karst houses in a complex pattern, bearing the trace of countless steps.
A Karst homestead is made of stone; sometimes it is mighty and sometimes modest, but always in line with the environment and natural laws.
The hardworking local people have created significant architectural elements that are nowadays still considered a model of artistic creativity.
ŠTANJEL
This fortified village has been marked by Romans, Turks, Venetians and Habsburgs. They all wanted Štanjel for themselves, but the village searched for people who would understand and respect it.
The soul of Štanjel recognized the perseverance and defiance of the Karst people and thus found its creators.
CUISINE
Time passes slowly in the Karst Region. Therefore, regional dishes are cooked slowly. The recipes pass down from one generation to the next and the housewives never cease improving on them. The secret of delicious cuisine is hidden in the select local ingredients that the Karst people grow with love in their gardens.
WINE
The Karst cellar has always been a status symbol of a homestead and a special, sacred place. You should enter it with great respect for the winemaker, who knows how to produce excellent wines of different varieties on a poor Karst soil.
